Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about using iconicoal.ai and our free stock photo library.
About iconicoal.ai
What is iconicoal.ai?
iconicoal.ai is a free stock photo library featuring thousands of unique images originally generated by the COALS AI platform. Only images that COALS itself generated — without a reference image — are eligible for publishing. We curate, moderate, and organize these images so that creators, students, bloggers, and small businesses can find high-quality visuals without expensive subscriptions.
How are the images on iconicoal.ai created?
Every image on iconicoal.ai was originally generated by the COALS AI platform without a reference image. When free-tier users generate an original image on COALS, it is automatically submitted for review. However, our quality and compliance standards are rigorous, and many submissions do not make the cut — only images that pass our full review process are published. Images created using reference photos are never eligible. Paid-tier users keep all of their images private. This means every image in our library is a purely COALS-generated original that has met strict quality standards — not scraped from the web, not derived from existing photos, and not pulled from other stock databases.
Is iconicoal.ai really free to use?
Yes, completely free. There are no hidden fees, no premium tiers, and no watermarks on downloaded images. We sustain the site through advertising, which is why we ask users to disable ad blockers when downloading. You can browse, search, and download images at no cost.
Do I need to create an account to download images?
No account is required. You can browse the entire library and download images without signing up or providing any personal information. We believe in making access to quality images as frictionless as possible.
Licensing & Usage
What license do the images use?
All images are released under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License (CC BY-NC 4.0). This means you can download, share, and adapt images for personal and non-commercial purposes, as long as you provide attribution to iconicoal.ai. Commercial use is not permitted under this license. See our License page for the complete details.
Can I use the images for commercial purposes?
No, our Creative Commons BY-NC 4.0 license does not permit commercial use. This includes selling products containing the images, using them in paid advertising campaigns, or incorporating them into commercial merchandise. For personal projects, educational materials, blogs, presentations, and social media posts that are not selling a product or service, you are welcome to use them freely.
How do I provide attribution for images I use?
Attribution is simple. Include a credit line such as Image from iconicoal.ai
with a link back to our site when possible. If you are using the image in a presentation or printed material where links are
not practical, a text credit mentioning iconicoal.ai is sufficient. See our
License page for detailed attribution examples.
Can I modify or edit the images?
Yes. The Creative Commons license allows you to remix, transform, and build upon our images. You can crop, resize, apply filters, combine with other elements, or adapt them in any way you like. If you share your modified version, you should indicate that changes were made and still provide attribution to iconicoal.ai.
Can I use the images in social media posts?
Absolutely. Our images work great for social media content on platforms like Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, and LinkedIn. As long as your use is non-commercial — meaning you are not directly selling a product or running a paid ad campaign with the image — you are free to post them. A mention or tag crediting iconicoal.ai is appreciated.
Can I use the images for school or university projects?
Yes, educational use is one of the best fits for our images. Use them in essays, presentations, research papers, classroom materials, or any academic project. Students and educators are encouraged to take advantage of the library. Just include a source credit in your bibliography or image credits section.
Downloads
What image formats and resolutions are available?
All images are available as high-quality PNG files at 1024x1024 resolution. This size works well for web use, social media posts, presentations, and most digital projects. Preview images on the site are shown at 800 pixels wide with a light watermark, but the downloaded originals are clean and unwatermarked.
Why is there a download limit?
We implement a rate limit of downloads per hour per visitor to ensure fair access for everyone and to protect our servers from automated scraping. For most users, this limit is more than generous. If you need a large number of images for a specific project, feel free to contact us and we can discuss options.
Why do I need to disable my ad blocker to download?
Advertising revenue is what keeps iconicoal.ai free for everyone. By displaying non-intrusive ads, we can cover server costs, maintain the platform, and continue offering images at no charge. We ask that you disable your ad blocker on our site so we can sustain this free service. You can re-enable it after downloading.
Quality & Content
How are images moderated for quality?
Every image submitted from the COALS platform goes through a rigorous multi-step review process, and many do not make the cut. First, an automated system checks for quality scores and screens for inappropriate content using NSFW detection. Only images that meet our strict quality and compliance thresholds are approved, while borderline cases are flagged for human review. This means that even though free-tier images are automatically submitted, a significant number are rejected. This ensures our library maintains a consistently high standard of visual quality and appropriate content.
What if I find inappropriate or low-quality content?
While our moderation system catches the vast majority of issues, some content may occasionally slip through. If you spot an image that seems inappropriate, offensive, or very low quality, please contact us with the image URL and a brief description of the issue. Our team will review it and take action promptly.
How often are new images added to the library?
New images are added continuously as COALS community members create and share their work. On a typical day, dozens of new images pass through moderation and become available for download. You can always see the latest additions on our homepage or browse by category to discover recently added content.
Can I request a specific type of image?
While we do not take custom image requests directly, our system tracks popular search terms that return no results. When enough people search for a particular subject, our platform can prioritize generating images in that category. So if you search for something and do not find it today, there is a good chance it will appear in the future as demand grows.
Technical
Why do preview images on the site have watermarks?
The light watermark on preview images helps protect our content from unauthorized scraping and mass downloading by bots. When you download an image through the proper download button, you receive the full-quality, unwatermarked original. The watermark is only applied to the on-site previews, not to the files you actually download.
How do I report a technical problem with the site?
If you are experiencing issues with the website — broken pages, download errors, images not loading, or any other technical problem — please email us at support@coals.ai. Include a description of the issue, what browser and device you are using, and any error messages you see. Screenshots are helpful too. We aim to respond to technical issues within 24-48 hours.
